How a €40 sale becomes €60: upselling for florists

Flowers leave you about 40–50% margin, accessories 70–80%. How to raise your average sale with a vase, a card and bundles, using real scripts from the counter.

Why a €40 sale can become €60 without any pushing

The customer came in for a bouquet. Fine. But they came for a moment, not for stems. A birthday, making up after a row, a thank-you. You’re selling the whole moment. And that moment needs a vase, a handwritten note, maybe some chocolate.

Let’s talk openly about money. On flowers you generally mark up by around 100–200% to allow for waste, which leaves you a margin of roughly 40–50%. On accessories your margin jumps to around 70–80%. A vase you buy for €4 sells for €15. A card costs you €1 and sells for €5. Every add-on that makes it onto the receipt lifts your average sale more than another three gerbera stems would.

What to sell alongside the flowers

the art of the upsell for florists

Not just anything. Only things that naturally complete the bouquet and carry a high margin. A vase, because the customer probably doesn’t have the right one at home anyway. A handwritten card: hardly anyone writes any more, which is exactly why it works. Good chocolate, by the till. A scented candle. And premium wrapping, a box instead of paper, which on its own makes the bouquet look more valuable.

The script: suggest, don’t push

The difference between upselling and hard selling comes down to one question. Not “anything else?”, because the answer is always “no”. Instead, a suggestion linked to the bouquet.

“This bouquet looks stunning in a clear glass vase. Have you got one at home, or shall I add one for you?” Or: “As it’s her birthday, I’ll write a line on a card for you. The writing’s free, you only pay for the card.” See the difference? You’re not selling an object. You’re taking care of something the customer is already worried about.

On Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, when there’s a queue out the door, the script gets even shorter: “Shall I make it the full set — bouquet, vase and card?” Three seconds. Half of them say yes.

How the €40 sale gets to €60

Do the sums in your head, right in front of the customer. Bouquet €40 + vase €15 + card €5 = €60. Or bouquet €40 + chocolate €8 + vase €15 = €63. Two natural add-ons take you to €60 or more, without forcing anything. On your website, let customers tick them for themselves on every bouquet: add a vase (+€15)? A handwritten card (+€5)? And create two or three ready-made bundles, such as “bouquet + vase + card” at a round price just below the cost of the items bought separately, so the customer feels they’ve got a good deal.

Tonight, choose one high-margin add-on. Tomorrow, offer it to every customer using the script above. In the evening, count how many said yes. That’s the difference you never see, because you never ask.
